Yes, with two race tracks closing, we’re overloaded here in the US with greyhounds needing homes. Once a year, however, we at Northcoast Greyhounds feel it important to show the world that we are neither ignorant of or lacking in compassion for their enormous humane efforts in behalf of our greyhounds' foreign cousins. Last year’s raffle benefited GRIN and the galgos of Spain. This year we are directing the proceeds of
REFUND RAFFLE #15
to the new kennel and veterinary facility for the Irish greyhounds at
Limerick Animal Welfare

Like the only other one featured in “Greyhounds in Art ‘07”, this 16" Holly Yashi necklace features three Tiny 8Balls as its centerpiece. This time it is complimented by a matching 7.25" bracelet with larger bronze 8Ball charm. Holly Yashi’s materials include a variety of semi precious stones and Swarvoski crystals set in sterling, vermeil, and their trademark niobium- making each link of this necklace and bracelet a work of art in itself. The two can be discreetly joined together to make one long necklace as well, as you can see in the ENLARGED PHOTOGRAPH on the ticket purchasing page.

Currently valued at $615 on Holly Yashi’s website (without greyhounds!), we invite you to view their other fabulous designs there, and more with greyhounds right HERE!

Limerick has been building new facilities in Ireland- next in line:
The Greyhound & Lurcher Kennel!

The downfall of the Irish greyhound began in the 1920s when betting turned dog racing into a profitable business. Today Ireland produces more greyhounds than any other country in the world, their lives governed by economic decisions alone. Greyhounds are treated as disposable commodities and each year thousands of Irish greyhounds are destroyed, abandoned, or exported. Limerick Animal Welfare takes in many of those abandoned greyhounds. Sixteen are on the premises awaiting new homes right now.

"Poor quality" greyhounds regularly finish their days in Spain, being used for straight racing (a form of coursing) under horrific conditions. Irish greyhounds are also used for breeding into the Spanish strain of greyhound, the Galgo- those which turn out to he too slow are often brutally disposed of, hanging being a favorite method.

The volunteers at Limerick attend Irish sales, never enough money in their pockets, in hopes of saving a greyhound from that Spanish fate. At the last sale, the very fortunate Juliet, Jasmine and Juno all went home to Limerick, as the volunteers watched hundreds of others being loaded into trucks to face a dismal future in Spain.

"Marion has soldiered on in her mighty struggle to help greyhounds - and, indeed, all animals in Ireland. Over the course of my work with Marion I have been singularly impressed with her perseverance, resourcefulness, and compassion. Limerick Animal Welfare has a new shelter and needs all possible help in order to build on this progress.

Marion's efforts are almost mythic. I called her home once and asked her husband, John, if Marion was home from Dublin yet. He said that the train was late - and it was probably because she had looked out the window, seen an animal in distress, and pulled the emergency stop cord..."
