About
the Artist
The
artist, Carol Orwin, studied sculpture at High Wycombe College of Technology
and Art, and then at St. Martins School of Art. An "Animalier",
Ms. Orwin is fascinated by the muscular form and movement in the animals
that she models. Her skill at depicting such natural position and expression
is sufficiently admired as to draw regular commissions for her work.
Ms.
Orwin's animals are first modeled in clay. A rubber silicone mold is made
for a limited edition of 25 casts for each sculpture which is then cast
in polymer resins using bronze, brass, copper, pewter, and marble fillers
- even a lighter weight filler, as in this piece, for international clients.
Each is then patinated in various acids to create its unique finish.
A
resident of Guildford, England, the artist has taught sculpture since
1973, had a studio at the Barbican in London for several years, and continues
to teach at the Harvey Center in Guildford. Though her awards are too
numerous and unfamiliar to list here for an American audience, the highlight
was having her work exhibited in the Mall Galleries in London, a well-respected
honor among her peers. Orwin collections are currently being exhibited
in Israel South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, America, Canada, Denmark
and the Netherlands.
"I
was showing a sculpture of my own recently departed greyhound at RHS Gardens
in Wisley," said Orwin, "when a woman bought both the remaining
pieces in the series with intentions of raffling them for the Celia Cross
Greyhound Rescue Trust. That was my introduction to the organization and
nine years later, Sonia and I are still firm friends."
100%
of the proceeds from this raffle will be equally divided between the Celia
Cross Trust and SOS Galgos in Spain. Ms. Orwin continues to contribute
examples of her work to the Trust to raise funds for less fortunate hounds.
"Celia Cross is in Clandon just down the road from my home and was
the source of my next greyhound Maddie, who is now, sadly, elderly but
still game for anything.
As
a sculptor, I feel greyhounds are the most beautiful of subjects to sculpt;
as a dog lover, I know they are the most wonderful of friends."
